Freshman Retreat Impact

This years Freshman retreat was another success. Held at Look up Lodge, the two day, one night retreat allows the freshman to bond as class in preparation for the next four years together. The students were given the opportunity to go to mass, worship in adoration, make memories with their friends, as well as getting to hear from many speakers. SJCS alumnus, Mark Estes (Class of ’16), came as a guest speaker to share his experiences as a young adult Christian and athlete with the students. Mark, who is working as the Communications Intern at St. Joe’s as part of his studies at Clemson University, was excited to be back and hopes that his message can have an impact on the freshman class.

Middle School Math Class Excitement

2017.09.25 Math Class (8)Our teachers are always striving to use the absolute best methods to engage our students and simplify their learning experience. For middle school math teacher Elaine Trakas, this meant making her lessons a bit more hands on. Her class recently explored solving variables using a bag of tiles that were various colors and sizes to represent different parts of the equations. It was easy to see the “light bulbs” going off as the students grasped the concept when explained a different way! Thanks Mrs. Trakas for being a fabulous St. Joe’s teacher!

Boys Swimming Wins First SCHSL Championship

We are so very proud of all our swimmers that represented St. Joseph’s Saturday at the AAA State Swim Championships. The boys brought home the first state AAA Swim Title and our girls moved up to 6th place from a 7th place finish in 2016. Almost every swim was a personal best time for the season. The team came together and it took every single swimmer to bring that title home. The boys won by a convincing 47 points. The team lead by seniors Patrick Alvis, Ryan Byrne and Alyssa Moore pulled together and made every swim count. Junior Liam Walker won state titles in both the 200-yard individual medley (1:57.93) and the 100 butterfly (51.82), and  freshman Silas Crosby took first in the 500 freestyle (4:46.65).

States Senior Swimmers“Words cannot express how it feels to watch these hard working teens take the podium representing St. Joseph’s,” says Coach Becky VanEvera. “We can not say it enough, these are remarkable teens, and we are blessed to be entrusted to coach them to the best of their abilities. Yesterday I can honestly say we had serious blood pressure issues, our vocal cords may need days to recover, the team brought us to tears, and Karen and I would not have it any other way.” Congratulations to all our swimmers, and Coaches Becky VanEvera and Karen Miros!

The following Knights swimmers are All-State:

Boys
Liam Walker 200 IM and 100 Fly
Silas Crosby 500 free and 100 Breast
200 Medley relay Jack Doyle, Silas Crosby, Liam Walker and Jack Lonergan
200 Free relay Silas Crosby, Jack Lonergan, Leo Gibson, and Liam Walker

Girls
Elizabeth Loudermilk 200 free and 200 IM

Read the Greenville News article and see Liam Walker’s interview below.
