SALT Convenes for Retreat

Members of the administrative staff and fifteen student members of the Student Academic Life Team (SALT) convened for the third annual semester retreat from January 8-9 at the Swamp Rabbit Lodge. The retreat offers the school leaders an opportunity to hear firsthand about the lived experience of St. Joseph’s students. Between preparing a spaghetti dinner and pancake breakfast, the group participated in open and informative discussions with regard to school culture. The group covered topics such as academic pressure, discovering self-worth and confidence, spiritual experiences at the school, and ways to improve communication between students and administration.

Ensembles Bring Holiday Joy

The Fine Arts Department presented their annual Christmas performances just before the holidays, playing a range of songs and arrangements such as Rejoice in the Lord Alway, At the Feast of Stephen, Carol of the Bells, What Star is This?, Good King Wenceslas and much more. Congratulations to our middle and high school Band, Strings, and Choral ensembles for putting on beautiful programs. Music enthusiasts should save the date for St. Joseph’s Spring Concerts held May 10-12.

SJCS Community Gives During Advent

During the Advent season, St. Joseph’s students and faculty/staff gathered to serve around the Upstate in hopes of making the holidays a little brighter for others. The school is incredibly proud of our community’s commitment to serve others, not only during Advent but also year-round. The following is just a small glimpse at how various clubs and households gave their time during Christmas:

  • Advancement Representatives assembled care packages for SJCS college alumni to wish them well during exam season
  • Campus Ministry organized Advent Reflection/Adoration for personal and group prayer
  • Choral and Strings Ensembles donated their time and talents to the SJCS Gala by performing throughout the evening
  • The Fesler Household visited their K5 buddies at St. Anthony’s for their annual Christmas party where they made crafts and read stories.
  • International Thespian Society members visited Shriners Hospital to lead a craft project
  • Junior Beta Club assembled toy/craft bags for the Children’s Hospital at GHS
  • The Noble Squires Households went to The Sterling Community Center to play and make crafts with children in the after-school program
  • Middle School Chess Club members collected new toys and donated them to Toys for Tots
  • The MidKnight Riders Household volunteered at the Salvation Army Christmas Tree Shop at the TD Convention Center
  • The Morris Household collected new toys and also donated them to Toys for Tots
  • National Art Honors Society student, Caroline Fowler, donated her time and talent to the SJCS Gala by creating a painting of chickadees which was then sold to the highest bidder. The proceeds of her painting were donated to the SJCS Annual Fund for Tuition Assistance
  • National Honor Society members donated their time by providing a clean-up service after the SJCS Gala
  • Tri-M Honors Society donated canned goods, collected at each of their Christmas concerts, to the St. Anthony’s Food Pantry

Retreat Prepares for Advent

After the last exam before Christmas Break, thirty students gathered at St. Mary’s Catholic Church for the SJCS High School Advent Retreat. According to SJCS Campus Minister, Gabe Lewis, the purpose of the retreat was about learning to recognize and follow God’s signs. The retreat opened with the singing of hymns and a lesson by Mr. Lewis followed by quiet personal reflection and small group sharing. Students then gathered for songs led by SJCS singers and guitarists Patrick Alvis, Jacob Kiser, Caroline McCoy, and Hallie Palms. After a walk through downtown Greenville, the students had dinner and were serenaded with a classical music concert performed by sophomores Dominic Mosley on piano and Francesca Strathern on the harp. After the concert, Ben and Ruth Robertson, a young Catholic couple from Greenville, shared a testimony of the importance of faith in their lives, and students had time to ask questions and share their “takeaways” from the day.

Alumni Reunite for Christmas Cheer

Continuing one of the most loved alumni traditions at St. Joseph’s, the SJCS Advancement Office and Alumni Board hosted their annual Alumni Christmas Social at the Commerce Club on December 23. Nearly 100 alumni enjoyed food and drink while socializing with former classmates. At the door, alumni signed one of the school’s oldest yearbooks as a keepsake guest book and had the opportunity to look through yearbooks from their time at SJCS. During the welcome from Alumni Board President George Patrick McLeer ’06, a number of door prizes were awarded to alumni, including a ticket to the 2016 annual auction Gala.
